A message from Sherry- Welcome to Spanish

Dear Middle School Parents and Students,

Welcome to another school year full of fun activities and learning experiences!

My name is Sherry Dickerson and I will be the Spanish teacher for 9 lucky 7th and 8th grade students! Some of you may remember me from the 2011-2012 school year when I worked as a long term substitute teacher. After an eventful year in Mexico, I am thrilled to be back at MIS!

Here is a little background about me!

I grew up in Montana (in Libby and then in Missoula) and love hiking, camping, traveling and learning languages. I studied International Studies and Romance Languages at the University of Oregon as an undergrad and continued to pursue my Masters in Education soon after. As a recent graduate looking for a new experience, I moved to Mexico in 2008 and started teaching in a private bilingual school. I lived in Mexico for almost 5 years and have taught in a variety of settings and educational levels. My most recent position was as a language coordinator for an IB school in Irapuato, Guanajuato. My husband, Miguel and I moved back to Missoula in August after celebrating our marriage in July. I am looking forward to a wonderful year at MIS!

We have a lot of plans for the Spanish classroom this year and we hope that you will find this class exciting and engaging while we explore new cultures and language structures. We will be focusing on different Spanish-speaking countries of the world and discovering different cultural traditions and holidays as we progress through theme based units that will allow you to explore your own language potential! We will be using a textbook called ¡Avancemos! to enrich our Spanish language curriculum and we will complete several projects based on unit themes and student interests. We will also be fostering international friendships by engaging in a pen pal program with students from an IB school in Mexico throughout the school year.

I am excited to work with all of you and I know we will have a successful school year! Parents, feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns, and we will be in constant communication to ensure the success of your children. Students, I can’t wait to work with you and I look forward to a year full of new learning and teaching experiences!

Sincerely,

Sherry Dickerson
